The future of the cod industry was discussed in Vladivostok
The Fishery Shipowners Association (FSA) made proposals on regulating the Pollock fishery, the most numerous species of cod fish, at the scientific and practical conference "Scientific Basis for the Implementation of the New Cod Industry Project in the Far East", which was held on Wednesday April 12 in Vladivostok.
In order to preserve the stock, it was proposed to maintain a ban on Pollock fishing in the West Bering Sea Zone to the west of 174° east longitude for two years.
At the same time, the FSA considers the expansion of the ban zone to be premature and proposes to analyze data on production volumes, the state of the commercial stock for several years.
The FSA also supported the plans to study the state of the pollock fish stock and its migrations in the eastern part of the West Bering Sea zone up to the dividing line of the sea spaces of Russia and the USA.
FSA President Aleksey Osintsev stressed that it is important to study not only the stock, but also the economic side of the fishery - what volumes of catches are used for processing and the proportions of Pollock production in the subareas of the West Bering Sea Zone. He recalled that Pollock is harvested in the West Bering Sea Zone, migrating in the summer from areas where the US is fishing. The strategy of the main competitors is aimed at the development of processing.
To prepare decisions, it is important to understand not only how much, what size range of Pollock and in what sub-regions we harvest, but also what we produce from it.
